Eric Ertzner, PE, LS
President
Eric Ertzner is the president and founder of Coastal Consultants. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, and is a licensed Land Surveyor (LS) and Professional Engineer (PE). Prior to founding CCPC in 2003, Eric worked in the industry for over 15 years. As the President of Coastal, he is responsible for day-to-day operations of the company. He is a member of several professional clubs and organizations, such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the Virginia Association of Surveyors.
Kevin Barkdull, LS
Director of Utility Services
Kevin Barkdull has worked in the utility engineering and surveying field for over forty years. He holds a B. S. degree in Land Surveying from Purdue University and is a licensed Land Surveyor in Virginia. As Director of Utility Services for Coastal Consultants, Kevin coordinates route selection, permitting, surveying and easement acquisition on utility projects throughout Virginia. Kevin is a member of the International Right of Way Association and serves on several committees on a local level. He has worked for both public utilities and private surveying/engineering firms.
Luke Hyman, LS
Survey Manager
Luke Hyman, the survey department manager, has been at Coastal for 8 years. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College with a B.A. in History. Luke is a licensed surveyor in the state of Virginia and manages the day to day operations for the entire survey department at Coastal Consultants.This includes managing all field operations and project management with utility and private contractors. Luke’s background is in rural boundary surveying and construction stakeout surveying.
John Nerden, EIT
Engineering Manager
John Nerden has a total of 34 years of experience in the construction, engineering and utility industry. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University as well as Engineer-In-Training and Construction and Project Management Certificates. At Coastal, John is the Engineering Department Manager. His primary responsibilities include reviewing highway and developer construction plans for conflicts with existing gas facilities, developing plans to eliminate conflicts while maximizing replacement opportunities, producing easement documents for modifications made though the design process, and representing our customers at design and updated meetings with VDOT, Counties, and design engineering firms.
Geoff Bennett Speer
SR Survey Analyst
Geoff Bennet Speer graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BA in English in 1991, then started surveying a few years later. He quickly became addicted to the diversity of the projects, the pleasure of working outdoors, and the unique combination of physical challenge and mental analysis. He has worked for Coastal Consultants since 2010, previously as a survey party chief and currently as a project analyst and record room researcher. Passionate about problem-solving, he is devoted to making sure that the surveyors, drafters, land agents and engineers have everything they need to succeed within their own individual roles in each project.
Alex Nguyen
Survey Coordinator
Alex Nguyen holds a B.A. in Business Management from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has been at Coastal for 9 years and takes part in data processing, survey crew coordination, and project management. He is an active member of the Virginia Association of Surveyors.
Mary Kellar
Office Manager
Mary Kellar is a native of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and has been working in business management for 15 years. Mary attended Robert Morris University, and holds several certifications in QuickBooks, Payroll Processing, and Human Resources Training. As Office Manager of Coastal Consultants, Mary oversees day-to-day operations of office staff, accounts payable and receivable, and bookkeeping among other office responsibilities.
